Descriptive Writing

We have been busy in Room 12 writing descriptive writing. We have learnt how important it is to use adjectives and WOW words in our writing to make it interesting for the reader and set a picture in their mind.

WALT describe the Gully using our senses
What we:
  • See
  • Feel
  • Hear
  • Smell

We went down to the Gully as a language experience to take in our surrounding environment and think about these senses. Then we came back to class and brainstormed a range of interesting vocabulary we could use for our writing.

Come on into Room 12 to see our amazing stories!!!

Inquiry Learning in Room 12

This term our topic of Globalisation continues...

We have been learning about the Chinese Culture. We have learnt about the Chinese New Year! Have a look at our beautiful Chinese Dragons on our Topic Wall. We have been really lucky to have Chinese visitors in our school this week. We have had special visitors in our classroom and we asked them a lot of questions about their culture.

RESPONSIBILITY Year 2 Worm Farming

The Year 2 children are responsible for the emptying the worm bins around the Junior School site. The children will also be responsible for making sure the right types of food are going into the worm bins. We have learnt:
  • That we only ever put food scraps and paper in the worm bins, food that the worms can break down into 'Worm Tea.'
  • A different Year 2 class will be responsible each week for emptying the worm bins.
  • We need to make sure the lids are back on the worm bins when we finish because worms only like the dark.
  • We can use the 'Worm Tea' to feed the different plants in the orchard.
Here are some photos of our learning journey with Mrs Elmore...

We are learning about the different bins and what rubbish to put where. Mrs Elmore is explaining that we do not want to use the Yellow bin really, that is why we bring litterless lunches to school. NZ does not need any more waste.

The worm bins can get smelly when the wrong foods are put in, the poor worms can't break down plastic.

Year 2 Cultural Day

This Term our school wide concept is GLOBALISATION and in Year 2 we are looking at countries around the world as well as what makes us all kiwi kids. In week 2 we had a special Cultural Day to celebrate all of our cultures. We came to school dressed up in our individual culture and brought along an artifact to share with the class. Some children even brought a special cultural lunch to school. Check out our photos from the day...
